Politics Students Explore Westminster

Students outside the Houses of Parliament

The A Level Politics students enjoyed a tour and a trip to Parliament with their Politics teachers.  Students were given a guided tour of the Parliamentary Estate where they went into the House of Lords, the Lobby, and Westminster Hall.  They really enjoyed hearing all the stories about events that have happened in Parliament over the years and asked very eloquent and pertinent questions of their guide.  They were awed by the majesty and beauty of the Palace at Westminster.

Next, they completed a workshop on Laws and Debating in the Education Centre in Victoria Gardens.  The students very much enjoyed this activity and had a nice surprise as, Adam Rolfe, who is the Parliamentary Assistant for MP Iain Stewart and Ms. Markatos’ former student, came to speak to them about his career in Politics.  He told  the students about his university experience and encouraged them to get involved in work experiences and apprenticeships.  He also told them about the many facets of his job and how he was able to meet the Vice President of the United States and the President of the EU.  Our students asked him many questions and left inspired towards a career in Politics.  Before leaving, students were given a quick teacher led tour of Parliament Square where they were shown the UK Supreme Court, Westminster Abbey, and a history of the statues in the square.  It was a fabulous experience for them to be truly in the ‘corridors of power’ !
