Sixth Formers Attend Model UN Summit
Year 12 Politics students completed a Model UN Summit virtually with Junior and Senior students from Argo Community High School, in Summit Illinois in the United States. The conference was on Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling. Students wrote position papers for their chosen countries and proposed solutions. Students then made alliances and partnered up with other countries who had similar ideas in unmoderated caucuses. Finally, the students met in groups to propose solutions and voted on them as a UN body. The resolution written by Aby Thiaw, Thomas Cheang, Kian Croxall, Lolade Omole, and Samantha Fabikun was entitled “Limiting Human Trafficking through Prevention and Education” and included the following points of action:
1) Education and Limiting Exposure to trafficking to include awareness campaigns and protecting potential victims
2) Advanced Border Control - Introducing better border screening and effective asylum processes
3) Preventing Reoffenders - introducing watch lists and restricting travel for offenders who have been released from prison.
This amazing work yielded very positive results as Aby Thiaw was voted Best Delegate, with Kian Croxall as Honourable Mention Best Delegate, as well as Thomas Cheang being awarded Best Position Paper. This was an excellent opportunity for all students to forge international relationships with students from across the pond and also put into real practice what they are learning in the classroom. All of their teachers are very proud of the hard work and tenacity with which the students have approached this enrichment learning opportunity. They are looking forward to doing more events like this in the future!
