New Student Leader Inductions
Fifteen new Student Leaders were inducted yesterday during a half day workshop in the Maureen Grant Room. The afternoon began with a social and some light bites for the new inductees to mingle with some of the current Student Leaders. After introductions, Ms Markatos talked about the qualities of leaders that we would like to emulate and how to lead as Jesus led. Now that they are leaders, it is important when they see a problem they try to ‘love, serve, and do the best that is possible.’ The current Student Leaders then took the reins to discuss what they have been doing alongside the Catholic Social Teachings of the school such as ‘Option for the Poor’ and ‘Human Dignity’. They explained the activities that they have been undertaking which include their volunteer work, anti-bullying campaigns, collecting donations, and organising remembrance ceremonies.
New and current students then all worked together to come up with new ideas that can be implemented in the year to come. Next students heard from Mrs Maw about Servant Leadership and how they should view themselves as leaders whom Jesus is working through to do good works. Students learned about the need to put others ahead of themselves and to serve out of love. The new leaders thought about the impact that they can have right here in school by ‘washing the feet of others’ as Jesus did. After their lunch, Mrs Hoarty joined us to discuss how leadership works within our school and what their roles would be going forward. Our new leaders would need to have a vision and a plan for what they wanted to accomplish. The leaders asked great questions about how to organise their ideas and how to accomplish long and short term goals.
Lastly, the leaders heard from Mrs Eastwood who helped the students to understand how Jesus led by using scripture. The students were quite inspired by this, taking ideas from Jesus and his disciples about the type of leaders that they want to become. They realised that they don’t have to be perfect, but that they can make a difference even if it is a small one. The day closed with a leadership liturgy that was led by the newly inducted members. M. Markatos is very proud and excited to have the new leaders on board and ready to go. Student Leaders will hit the ground running as their next service project, the Great Clean Out, is set to launch in March.
